GROUP CYCLING

Our group rides currently take place on Sunday morning at 8:00am.  During the winter months, if it is 45 degrees or below we will be riding indoors, which means bring your trainer.  Space is limited, so email Amy to reserve your spot.  We plan to add at least one more group ride during the week this Spring.  If you have any suggestions on specific days and times, send Amy a quick email.  Keep in mind, these rides are not instructional or educational, just a group of cyclists getting together for a ride.  We do invite all levels to participate.

If you desire individual cycling instruction/education, see the “Cycling Instruction” category below.

CYCLING INSTRUCTION

Purpose

Our mission is to encourage the use of bicycles; promote bicycle safety; offer instruction in the care and proper use of bicycles; provide opportunities for members to socialize with others who have an interest in bicycles.

Overview

  • Teach bike skills to new riders and/or riders who want to brush up on rusty skills
  • Lead weekly rides based on participant’s input
  • Offer one-on-one training to riders who want that service
  • Provide riders with a 6 to 8 month training program that culminates with the Old Kentucky Home Bike Tour
  • Offer seminars to participants who currently do not own bikes but are interested in buying a bike.
  • The classes listed below are 60 minutes long and can be taught individually or in a group of 2-3 participants.

Bike Skills 101:  Bike Handling

This clinic is the foundation of everything else you’ll learn on the bike. This is the clinic where we teach the old dogs new tricks and the newbies the fundamentals. You’ll learn about balance and weight distribution and how that affects your ability to ride your bike safely and confidently. We’ll learn skills like riding with no hands, emergency stops, and how to look behind you while holding your line, how to steer, and counter-steer. After just a few hours, you’ll be a better bike handler and have much more fun on the bike.  You’ll also learn on-the-road maintenance, such as repairing a flat on the fly.

Bike Skills 201:  Climbing and Descending

What goes up must come down, right? In this clinic, we’ll teach you how to climb like a pro-seated climbs, standing climbs, short climbs, steep climbs, extended climbs. And then, we’ll teach you how to come back down again, focusing on a fast straight descent. Pre-requisite: Bike Skills 101 or equivalent experience.

Bike Skills 301:  Group Riding

Wheel-sucking is an art!  Whether you’re a racer or a recreational rider, group riding skills will help you ride longer, faster, and farther. We’ll learn draft theory and basic pace-lines, beginning with partner work and progressing to more complex group riding skills and introductory racing techniques. Pre-requisite: Bike Skills 101 or equivalent experience.
